About This Place

Nestled in the heart of Centreville, VA, Okaeri Japanese Cafe offers an authentic dive into Japan’s beloved cafe culture, serving up a delightful array of comfort dishes and sweets that stretch far beyond the ordinary. This cozy spot specializes in Japanese-style cafe fare with a particular emphasis on their signature onigiri, fluffy soufflé pancakes, and inventive takes on classic musubi and curry dishes. Whether you’re a longtime fan of Japanese comfort foods or a curious newcomer, Okaeri delivers with an inviting blend of taste and atmosphere.

The cuisine here is a celebration of bold, well-balanced flavors and soft, delicate textures. The onigiri—rice balls hand-packed with rich fillings like spicy salmon or savory beef curry—are a standout, praised for their satisfying depth and authentic seasoning. The "Spam Musubi" might raise an eyebrow at first, but as regulars will attest, this deceptively simple dish bursts with a harmony of salty-sweet flavors that you wouldn't expect yet can’t stop craving. For those with a sweet tooth, the café’s soufflé pancakes are a must-try: light-as-air stacks with varieties such as the silky Strawberry, Matcha with a mochi sheet topping, and the exotic Ube and Banana Choco flavors. These pancakes glide effortlessly across the palate, offering a cloud-like softness paired with subtle, natural sweetness.

Drinks perfectly complement the menu’s delicate flavor profiles, featuring refreshing choices like the Matcha Yuzu Lemonade—with its bright citrus tang mingling beautifully with earthy matcha—and indulgent options such as the Hot Black Sesame Latte and the Warabi Mochi Hojicha Latte. These beverages not only refresh but also provide a comforting warmth and depth, enhancing your overall dining experience.

The atmosphere at Okaeri Japanese Cafe is intentionally unpretentious and intimate, described by patrons as a small, welcoming space ideal for relaxed meals and quiet celebrations. While the décor leans minimalist, it allows the quality and authenticity of the food to take center stage. The cafe’s limited seating encourages either a leisurely sit-down experience or a convenient takeout option, catering well to diverse dining preferences.

Customers consistently highlight the quality and distinctiveness of Okaeri’s offerings. Antonio Guzman raves that despite the spartan setting, the “spam” comes highly recommended, and the onigiri curry is something you’ll truly appreciate. Aaliyah Cannedy praises the spicy salmon onigiri’s bold flavors during her birthday visit, though she notes the soufflé pancakes can occasionally lean too eggy for some palates. V M fondly recalls how their strawberry pancake evokes memories of Japan, appreciating the authentic use of egg and balanced sweetness. Meanwhile, Sai S expresses passionate enthusiasm for the jiggly pancakes, describing them as a one-of-a-kind indulgence that even those without a sweet tooth will crave.

In sum, Okaeri Japanese Cafe serves as a genuine slice of Japan within Centreville’s dining landscape, where each bite resonates with care, tradition, and creativity. Whether you crave a savory hand-held onigiri, a comforting bowl of curry, or a luscious stack of soufflé pancakes paired with thoughtfully crafted tea lattes, Okaeri invites you to savor a heartfelt culinary experience that will linger long after your visit.

Don’t be fooled by the spartan atmosphere. This is the real deal. Order the spam first. Yes, I know. You did not come here for spam, but it is unbelievably tasty. Then try the onigari curry. You will thank me. If you are into suffles, then order whatever you like. They are good.

Compared to the souffle pancakes I had in NYC years ago, what this place has in the DMV area is not bad. We got the matcha and strawberry souffle along with matcha latte. The matcha souffle has a mochi sheet on top.

I celebrated my birthday here and had a great experience. The space is small and intimate, perfect for a relaxed meal. Most dishes were fantastic—especially the spicy salmon onigiri, which was packed with flavor. The only miss for me was the soufflé pancake; it leaned a bit too eggy for my taste. Still, I’m excited to come back and try the curry. I spent a little over $70.00 for everything.

I purchased the strawberry pancake, it was good but not overwhelming. I’ve had these before in Japan, so it’s definitely a different taste but it does bring me back. I can taste real egg was used and the top cream is just right, not too much sweet. The inside is smaller than I expected so be prepared to wait or take out, there isn’t a lot of table or seats available. There are enough parking spaces, but be prepared it might be full because this place is in a plaza with lots of restaurants and stores in the same area.

One of my favorite desserts/foods of all time! I don’t have much of a sweet tooth but I craaave the jiggly pancakes. They’re so good and there’s no comparable dessert - itms very unique and you have to just go and try it!

The space is cute but small. I see many people had trouble finding tables during our time there. There’s 2 kiosks available to order or they can take your order at the counter as well. They call your receipt/order number when it’s ready and you can go pick it up at the counter. I had their onigiri in the past, I thought it was okay. I know they now have curry/katsu rice but I haven’t had it. I mainly come here for their desserts. I like their soufflé pancakes, ube/purple potato is my favorite (but strawberry flavor is decent as well). Last time I went, they also served kakigori (Japanese shaved ice) and decided to try the ramune flavor. It was great! Not too sweet and really refreshing against summer heat. Overall I really enjoy this place and their desserts. Just be aware of lack of dine in space when you go.
